It’s not just Akshay Kumar, but the female characters in the satirical dark comedy drama, Jolly LLB 2, were also applauded.

One such character was the wonderfully-nuanced cameo by SayaniGupta, who played Hina Siddiqui, a young Muslim woman driven to despair.  It’s a small but pivotal and deeply impactful role, so much so that Sayani was lauded for her performance by some of the veterans from the industry. Twitterati in large numbers also poured their love for her.

Gupta has so far been doing a balancing act between commercial and art cinema. She has received critical acclaim for her offbeat and distinctive roles in films like her debut Margarita With A Straw (played the role of Kalki’s love interest)and most recently Fan (as Shah Rukh Khan’s secretary), however, Sayani doesn’t take compliments or criticism seriously.

“I have never sat down to ponder over what others have to say because ultimately you know what you have done. Piyush Mishra (theatre and film actor, NSD alumni) called me few days back when I was shooting for Jagga Jasoos, and said while referring to Jolly LLB 2, ‘I didn’t know you acted so well.’  Lot of people are complimenting me on social media as well. Somebody told me that they went to watch the film thrice because of me. There are lot of people who said I made them feel for the part and I made them cry,” says Sayani.

She continues, “My performance really moved my mother, and she is far too detached about the industry and not at all excited about the film world or what I am doing. She is not in favour of me acting and it was quite a struggle to convince her when I went to FTII (Film and Television Institute of India). Little by little, she is coming to terms with it but she would have rather seen me as an IAS officer or in a regular job.”

“We are from middle class family and they didn’t want their only daughter to get into films. Obviously there are certain perceptions about the film industry. My close friends never say nice things, they are always critiquing my work, but finally they felt that I was brilliant in Jolly LLB 2.”

Strangely enough, Sayani has been getting offers for horror movies for last few years and she, too, fails to understand the reason for it. “Maybe they think I am a Bengali, I have big eyes…” she laughs.

While Sayani so far has rejected two offers post Jolly LLB 2 (as  she is “choosy”, “instinctive”, “and not ready for it”), she is certainly excited about her first international project, The Hungry, which is an Indo-British production starring Naseeruddin Shah and Tisca Chopra. The film, for which the actors were very selectively chosen, is directed by debutante filmmaker Bornila Chatterjee, who is an alumnus from New York’s Tisch School of the Arts. The Hungry is an adaptation of William Shakespeare tragedy Titus Androcinus, which is believed to have been written between 1588 and 1593.

“This year marks the 400th death anniversary of Shakespeare. His stories could seem a tad hyper-real for this era, but this film is a realistic take. The script won at a collaborative cine-lab,” says Sayani, further adding, “The film has a bunch of deadly actors. We shot for it in Delhi and Agra. The ambience on set was stimulating and since we all got along so well, it turned out to be a great shoot.”

Recently, Sayani earned an honourable mention for the Best Actress award for her short film, Leeches, at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles  (IFFLA). In just two years of her career, she’s also bagged one of the lead roles opposite Naseeruddin Shah with The Hungry. The actress considers it her privilege to act alongside ‘Naseer’, who was her teacher at the FTII.

“Naseer was very excited about his role after decades. He plays my father. He has been my teacher and lot of my understanding about acting and the craft is because of him. It was almost like reassurance of sorts when he would come to take our class. I adore him as a human being. He is fun to be around. He has always taught us how acting is all about reacting. He is a keen listener, which adds to the performance,” she says, adding:

“There are two of the coolest men I have worked with – Shah Rukh Khan and Naseeruddin Shah. They are sensitive, they are aware, they don’t take themselves too seriously. They are normal dudes.”

So did Sayani take any advice from the two “coolest” men?

“Some of the things Naseer told me is: ‘Learn your lines till you bump into a furniture. Know your lines backwards. Study the script well. Be relaxed and don’t take things too seriously. Make it fun and light.’ On the other hand, there’s much to learn just by the way Shah Rukh carries himself. He is the most technically sound actor, I feel. His understanding, the cleanliness with which he does everything, his craft is solid. He doesn’t show it. He is persistently hardworking and also the humility. He doesn’t take his stardom seriously,” she reveals.

Two of Sayani’s “friends” from the industry are the erstwhile directors – Rajkumar Hirani and Vishal Bhardwaj. She may not have offers from them yet but she certainly takes their advice. “I don’t talk work with them. Hirani often tells me that I should give people time after they have seen my film. I did audition for a part in Rangoon but Vishal told me that it won’t be good enough for me. I would never ask them to cast me because that could hamper our relationship. Whenever they want to cast me, they will.”

Sayani is currently shooting for Ranbir Kapoor-Katrina Kaif- starrer Jagga Jasoos which has been in the making for a long time. “When I signed the film I was playing the only narrator in the film. I had a separate track of my own. But since there is no script — Dada (Director Anurag Basu) doesn’t work with scripts, he writes as he goes along — my role has changed. I will know what my part is only after I see the film. Also, it is a very difficult film when it comes to format. It is musical, it’s a children’s film, and it is not a normal narrative. I play a 14-year-old girl and that is all I know (laughs),” she says.

Koffee with Karan season 5: Shahid and Mira Kapoor, get a room

In the latest episode of Koffee with Karan, Shahid Kapoor and his wife Mira were so mushy, in-love, and all about each other that we felt like asking them to get a room (or go home).

For their first public appearance together, this was quite a memorable one. Quick flashback: the duo announced their marriage in 2015 amid many rumours. It was an arranged one and had the whole country talking. They were wedding in a lavish ceremony. Whatever questions you had about the couple, this episode of Koffee with Karan definitely answered most of them.

Karan Johar being himself, started the show by addressing the elephant in the room: in his last few appearances on the show, Shahid appeared with all his rumoured love interests, Kareena, Priyanka, and Sonakshi. While Karan took Shahid’s case on this, Mira seemed unfazed and quite sporting.

This was followed by multiple stories of how Shahid and Mira met for the first time. Sample these: When both families gathered together to discuss Shahid and Mira’s wedding, the duo were unaware. They were assuming that the match being spoken about was Shahid’s younger brother Ruhaan, and Mira (because their ages are similar). Upon meeting for the first time, Shahid and Mira spoke for 7 hours, non-stop. It was after meeting a couple of times did they decide to get married, but when Shahid met Mira’s father for the first time, he was prepping for Udta Punjab. Which means that his father-in-law saw him in his Tommy Singh avatar (ouch).

However, this story takes the cake. During their first meeting, Shahid asked Mira why she wants to marry someone much older to her. Mira’s response was, “why do you want to marry someone much younger? That’s much worse.”

One of the first judgments you make about Mira (let’s face it, we were all judging her, this is the woman’s first TV appearance), is that she’s unlike a “star wife”. She seems quite real, and it shone in one particular anecdote. When Karan asked her how she manages at film parties, she revealed that she actually likes meeting new people and hearing stories about a world she is not a part of. But more importantly she had no reason to feel weird or out of place.

Mira left no opportunity to make fun of Karan Johar (woot woot). When they played a game called “pillow talk”, Johar asked Mira what she says to Shahid every night before sleeping. When she revealed it was, “I love you,” Karan in his trademark style said, “I feel like I’m watching some Valentine’s Day special”, to which Mira said, “it’s like you’re watching one of your own movies.”

The flavour of being real must have transferred to potentially one of the most histrionic host on Indian TV, because when Karan Johar asked Mira things about Bollywood she doesn’t like, she said, “Airport looks and nepotism,” to which he responded, “the latter might be directed at me”.

Suffice it to say, this was one of the most candid episodes, where love was not just in the air but pretty much everywhere (this rhyme was as cliched as the couple, Shahid and Mira).

Ranveer Singh on working with Shahid in Padmavati: ‘Excited to collaborate with him’

After starring as the lead protagonist in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela (2013) and Bajirao Mastani (2015), Ranveer Singh is all set to play the antagonist Alauddin Khilji in Bhansali’s next period drama Padmavati.

Bhansali’s Padmavati has just recently gone on floors and stars Deepika Padukone in the titular role as the beautiful queen of Chittor who plays a pivotal role in a battle.

While Ranveer Singh was already slotted to star in the film opposite his alleged real life girlfriend; the news of Shahid Kapoor joining the cast as Raja Ratan Rawal Singh — Rani Padmini’s husband also sparked rumours about a rivalry brewing between the leading men on sets.

While the shoot of Padmavati has just taken off; Ranveer Singh took time out to clarify a few things about his alleged rivalry with his costar in an exclusive interview with HT Cafe.

He told the daily that when he found out that the script required a third hero, he spoke to Bhansali that they “should get the best possible actor to play this part.” And I am very excited about Shahid [coming on board]. I think he’s a brilliant actor and an amazing inclusion to our team. He will add immense value.”

He also added the reports of any friction between the actors was not true since he and Shahid share a warm and affectionate equation with each other and also work out at the same gym. “I have tremendous amount of respect and admiration for his work and him as an actor. I have been watching his films even before I got into the industry. I am excited to be collaborating with him.” Singh elaborated in the interview.

This is not the only point of controversy surrounding Padmavati though. Reports had suggested that Sanjay Leela Bhansali had been asked to portray the historical drama with historical accuracy by a political organisation, or he wouldn’t be allowed in Gujarat.

Thankful to Shahid for bringing me this role: Alia Bhatt on ‘Udta Punjab’

In Abhishek Chaubey’s next film Udta Punjab you won’t recognise Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt. Kapoor plays a rockstar named Tommy Singh, while Alia Bhatt essays the role of a Bihari migrant.

Bhatt said that Abhishek Chaubey was sceptical about casting her as a Bihari girl in the film.

“I think our director Abhishek Chaubey was sceptical about casting me in the film. I am happy that I am a part of it. This character is completely different from what I am in real life. I felt that there would be out of box things in the film and it has,” said Alia at the trailer launch of Udta Punjab.

380“I had to learn Bihari. Though I talk less in the film, but the dialogues are powerful. For a month or so, I worked on my dialect with the help of a trainer. And for my look, I have to give credit to the costume designer and our director Abhishek Chaubey,” she added.

Alia credited her co-star Shahid Kapoor for getting her this film. “I am thankful to Shahid for bringing up this role to me. I wanted to be in this film. It’s a lifetime opportunity. It’s a great story,” she said.

Udta Punjab highlights the rampant issue of drug abuse among youth in Punjab.

Kareena Kapoor Khan essays the role of a doctor who is determined to fight the illegal transportation of drugs, including medicinal ones that are sold without prescription in Punjab. Punjabi actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh is seen as a police official in the trailer.

Meanwhile, Anurag Kashyap, whose Phantom Films has co-produced the film, has tweeted that the trailer of Udta Punjab had been cleared without any cuts or beeps.

‘Good and new stories need to be told': Shahid Kapoor on ‘Udta Punjab’

Mumbai: Actor Shahid Kapoor says his upcoming film Udta Punjab on substance abuse is not an issue of just one state and needs to be addressed on a pan-India level.

“For Haider, we used Kashmir as the backdrop but the story was human journey. An issue that is of one state can be an issue of entire country. It’s not that we are saying through this film that the issue exists only in one state, it is just that we chose Punjab as the backdrop,” Shahid told reporters last night at the film’s trailer launch.

“It is an issue that needs to be addressed… It’s a real issue for parents and children. It is courageous on part of our director Abhishek Chaubey to talk about it,” he said.

The Jab We Met star hopes the audiences understand the context of the film. “It’s a fictional film with fictional characters but it has an important issue. I hope people will take it in the right context.” Shahid, who plays a Punjabi pop star in the film, said it was difficult for him to get  into the skin of the character as it is was a “loud” one, unlike of his real self.

“When I heard the role of Tommy Singh it had to be nothing like me. He is a Punjabi pop star who is a substance addict. He is not a regular guy. I had to work on my body and look.  The most difficult part was to get into the head of this character like why he behaves like this, why is he so eccentric and mad. Those who are addicts are often hyper and eccentric. Usually I prefer to do less loud characters,” he said.

On his on-screen rockstar look where he is seen sporting long hair and tattoos on body, Shahid said, “Abhishek Chaubey was concerned with what I was doing with my hair we had discussions over it and then things worked out. I did not want to get a body of a body builder I wanted it of someone who has abused himself. We worked a lot on that.” Given the unusual subject of the movie and his character, the 35-year-old star says telling a new story always involves a certain amount of risk.

“I think good and new stories needs to be told. If you don’t do it that way then you will never be able to discover things yourself and never be original. I feel new things are always risky,” he said. “The story of the film is honest and the intention of the film is to give message to audience.” he added. The film features Shahid Kapoor, Diljit Dosanjh, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Alia Bhatt in key roles.
